In the Beginning
- Since the Redbrook concept was based on convenient city access and rural atmosphere, location was always going to be a priority. When the right location was found, it was clear that significant land transformation would need to take place in order to achieve the aesthetic appeal that FD was looking for.
- The first step was to regenerate the existing native trees and flora. In addition, 20,000 natives were planted throughout the subdivision to create the unique atmosphere. Considerable landscaping also helped lift each of the 17 sites.
- The most economic roading plan required straight roads. However, we felt direct routes would be fundamentally at odds with the aesthetics we were seeking to create. Though it proved more expensive, we designed roads to wind and curve, to conceal parts of the subdivision and then reveal them as the driver progressed. Not only did this break up the landscape, it also delivered privacy and a sense of space.
- 2500m2 was the designated residential lot size for Redbrook. Smaller lots would have created more sites, but at the expense of spaciousness. Anything much larger than 2500m2 would require a level of maintenance inconvenient for most people seeking refuge from the city. 2500m2 proved an ideal balance which yielded 17 city-country lifestyle sites.
- To ensure resident privacy, strategic landscaping and planting was carried out between house lots.
